Afternoon Tea in the Glamorous Café Royal

Afternoon tea beautifully presented on a three tiered cake stand
Originally opening in 1865, the Cafe Royal is the byword in glamour and style and with a guest list that has included Oscar Wilde, Elizabeth Taylor, David Bowie and Diana, Princess of Wales. So a few weeks ago in our ever continuing quests to partake of afternoon tea in every luxury hotel in Westminster Julie Chandler and I paid the Cafe Royal a visit too.

A delicious of vegetarian sandwiches
The service was excellent and the tea was beautifully presented. On the top tier was a selection of sandwiches. Julie had the traditional sandwiches and I had the vegetarian option which I was extremely impressed with especially my favourite which was the goat's cheese and beetroot.

Scones with lemon curd
The freshly baked plain and raisin scones were delicious. They came warmed and wrapped in a napkin and served with generous portions of Devonshire clotted cream, strawberry jam and lemon curd.

Selection of pastries
There was an attractive assortment of tasty pastries and cakes with my personal favourite being the cheesecake and the macaroon.

Room Ten
The afternoon tea was served in Room Ten, which offers all day informal dining in a contemporary style atrium. It was designed by David Chipperfield Architects as part of a four year refurbishment which was completed in 2012, they have created a beautiful space while managing to retain many of its historic features. I particuarly liked the original balcony rail and the light fittings.

Main entrance from Regent Street
The grand historic entrance features customised stained glass windows featuring the initial of the original proprietor Frenchman Daniel Nicholas Thévenon, who anglicised his name to Daniel Nicols.

Grand staircase
I'm well known for my love of dramatic staircases and one by the main entrance is elegant and impressive.

The opulent Grill Room
While we were there we took the opportunity to take a quick look at the magnificent Grill Room has been lovingly restored to its original Louis XVI interior with it's painted ceilings, rococo plasterwork and gilded mirrors.
Overall we had a fun and relaxing afternoon and we hope to return soon this time to enjoy the splendour of the Grill Room.
