Tuesday 26th November 2013 6.30 – 8.30pm SORRY FULLY BOOKED
We are delighted to be working with Centre of the Cell to offer a medical Whitechapel walk.
We explore Whitechapel’s fascinating medical history, focusing on the rich heritage of the Royal London Hospital, Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry and the people connected with the area. Find out more about Joseph Merrick, better known as the Elephant Man, Nurse Edith Cavell and the infamous Jack the Ripper.
After the 60 minute walk about Whitechapel’s medical past, you can find out about how scientists at the Blizard Institute are researching the treatments of the future with a visit to Centre of the Cell, the first science centre in the world to be located within working biomedical laboratories. Centre of the Cell’s ‘Pod’ is suspended above the laboratories so visitors will be able to see research labs as they enter the centre. The experience includes interactives with the latest digital technologies. Many feature footage of scientists describing their work and there are enhanced films projected onto the ceiling of the ‘Pod’. Visitors can also enjoy microscopes and specimens from the Pathology Museum such as a human brain. Using the interactives, visitors can ‘grow’ skin, hunt a gene for inherited deafness, develop a new antibiotic for TB and grow some virtual stem cells for our scientists.
